Flying with your pup

We do not fly or ship out our puppies! Parents have come from all over the US to pick up our puppies here by flying or driving. We are about an hour from Richmond International Airport RIC, about 40 min from Charlottesville Albemarle Airport CHO and about 2-3 hours (plus traffic) from Dulles International IAD. Contact us early to meet at an airport or hotel area.

You can choose to visit us by AA or Southwest and Delta. Make sure you have the correct size Pet Carrier for your selected airline. Most pet carriers are soft sided collapsible 18″x11″x11″. Metal/plastic crates are not for in-cabin plane travel as they are for big adult dogs going into the cargo area.

Puppies usually weigh around 9-10 pounds at 8 weeks old or 10-12 lbs at 10 weeks old. Licensed Vet administered vaccination document are $50 with vet contact info. Out of US travel health certificates cost extra. Consider cold/heat puppy restrictions and whining issues for flight travel.

We provide a benadryl pill at pickup to reduce motion sickness and promote calmness during travel but it will wear off within six hours of pickup. Dosage is 1mg per lb and we place it in cheese or a piece of meat. At 7-8 weeks they are about 15 lbs. At 9-10 weeks they are about 20lbs. Please keep them hydrated! The puppy will be wearing an Adaptil anxiety calming collar at pickup (new opened within an hour of pickup and lasting 3-4 weeks).
Contact your veterinarian for a prescription of: trazodone (brand name Desyrel®), gabapentin (brand name Neurontin®), or alprazolam (brand names: Xanax® and Niravam®) to reduce the anxiety that some dogs experience when traveling

If you notify us of travel by air then we can pre-prepare your puppy to build crate comfort. We will put your puppy in a crate and carry him/her around throughout the day for 1-2 weeks before your flight to feel comfort being in a carrier.

Consider getting 2-3 puppy diapers (with a tail hole) to wear on flights more than 1 hour long.
